What is the Purpose of Online Marketing?
Wikipedia defines online or internet marketing as “the marketing of products or services over the internet”. While that may be a true definition, we view online marketing as the process of increasing a websites visibility and traffic for the express purpose of increasing sales and profits. This is accomplished mainly through the processes of SEO, link popularity and paid placement.
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of organizing and configuring the content of a site to increase the relevance and importance that specific search engines place upon that site. This is done through an ongoing process of analyzing how search engines work and what people are actually searching for.
What is Link Popularity?
Link Popularity can be defined as the quantity and quality of websites that have linked to your website (often called “backlinks”). Most search engines now use link popularity in their ranking algorithms, with Google using it as its most important ranking factor (Google refers to this as PageRank™).
While many folks focus exclusively on the number of backlinks, the “quality” of the backlinks are even more important. The quality of the link is based on the reputation of the website that links to you, the keywords used in the link and the title of the page that links back.
Basically, the more popularity and quality “backlinks” you have pointing to your site, the higher your ranking will be in Google and many other search engines.
What is Paid Placement or Pay Per Click?
Paid placement or pay per click (PPC) is a service such as Google AdWords, MSN Ad Center or Yahoo Search where your listing or rankings are purchased on a “bid” basis. Any person or company willing to pay the most money “per click” will get the highest listing on the designated page. These links are shown as “Sponsored Listings” so searchers know that websites are paying for that position.
